Why This Study Matters for the Industry
The online food delivery (OFD) sector has experienced rapid expansion, fueled by digitalization, shifting consumer habits, and the COVID-19 pandemic. As the industry grows, its success depends on the gig workers who power it—delivery drivers. However, despite their essential role, these workers face numerous challenges that impact their livelihoods and, ultimately, the sustainability of the industry.
Our research highlights the voices of these drivers, offering valuable insights into their struggles and how they are shaping the evolving OFD work environment. By understanding their experiences, stakeholders—including platform operators, restaurants, and policymakers—can develop better strategies to ensure a more sustainable and efficient ecosystem.
How We Conducted the Study
To capture the perspectives of OFD drivers, we analyzed over 300,000 posts and comments from r/doordash_drivers, a dedicated Reddit community. Our dataset spans three key periods: before, during, and after COVID-19, offering a timeline of industry shifts. Using advanced machine learning techniques with the Python Natural Language Toolkit, we identified recurring themes and challenges voiced by drivers.
What We Found: Six Key Challenges
Our research identified six major challenges consistently faced by OFD drivers: customer interactions, financial struggles, platform-related issues, restaurant coordination, safety concerns, and transportation logistics. These findings emphasize that OFD drivers are more than just service providers—they are central to bridging communication between customers, restaurants, and delivery platforms.
What This Means for the Future of OFD
Our study highlights the urgent need for stronger collaboration among all OFD stakeholders. As the industry continues to evolve, platform companies, restaurants, and policymakers must acknowledge drivers as essential partners in ensuring service quality and operational efficiency. To shape the new work paradigm in online food delivery services, we outline key practical takeaways (see the figure below).
Industry Impact & Next Steps
Our research, recently accepted by the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research, provides a foundation for further discussions on sustainability and innovation in OFD services. We hope it encourages industry leaders to take proactive steps in addressing these challenges, ensuring a better future for all stakeholders in the OFD ecosystem.
